Brown Family

Post by Penne » Sat Jun 10, 2006 9:02 am

Hi! I was hoping someone might be able to help me. My Great Great Grandmother was born in Driffield in 1837. Her name was Maria Ann Brown and she emmigrated to Australia when she was 14. She went with her father James Brown, mother Eliza Brown (nee Pickering) and her sisters. I am wanting to trace the family back further through both James and Eliza but as both surnames are common surnames I am having problems. Especially as I'm in Australia. I think James father may have been Thomas Brown but I'm not sure. James was born around 1817 and Eliza was born around 1821, I think. I am going on their ages that were listed on the ship list. I hope that someone can help me.
Cheers! Penne

I have fond Maria Ann Brown born 1838 on the 4th Jan.Driffield. Her father was James Brown and her mother was Elizabeth. I cant find her in the 1841 or 1851 census.

I would contact the East Riding Archives for more information:
County Hall,
East Riding of Yorkshire, HU17 9BA.

Tel: 01482 393939, Fax: 01482 393375, E-mail:

Good luck in your sarch.

Thanks Plook.
I will get in touch with them.
It is strange that they are not listed in either of the census. Their last child to be born in Driffield was Matilda about 1845 ane their last child, Margaret was born about 1852, but I'm not sure where. They arrived in Australia in January 1853. I was lucky because Maria's death certificate had so much information but I just can't get past her parents. Very hard when you live overseas. If I can just find her grandparents I think I could move on so I will definitely try the East Riding Archives.
Thanks again!

Hi again.
Thanks to a lovely lady in archives I now think James Brown may have been born in Langtoft with Cottam in 1813. Does anyone think we might have a connection.

Hi Penne,
I know it's a while since your last post but I found a bit of info while I was researching my Brown family. Unfortunately it wasn't the one I wanted but I still have the info which might be of interest to you.

James Brown b1813 Langtoft-with-Cottam married Elizabeth Pickering at Great Driffield. I don't know when as I didn't pursue it but another entry stated she died at sea in 1853.

I also found a Matilda Brown Chr 29/1/1846 in Great Driffield. Her entry called her mother Eliza, Father James.

I also have an Elizabeth Pickering chr 6/11/1820 at Middleton-on-the-wold. Father Richard b 1791 Middleton-on-the-wold and mother Elizabeth Gray chr 26/5/1793 Middleton-on-the-wold. They married 15/4/1811 at Middleton-on-the-wold.
Elizabeths father was Stephen Gray and mother Catherine b1757c. She was his first wife, the second being Jane b1759c
They may not be of use to you and i have no other details.
