John HOPE & Elizabeth (nee STONE(s)) in Kirkburn

I am trying to confirm whether William Hope (abt. 1788-1833) of Sledmere is the son of John HOPE (1744-1832) and Elizabeth (nee STONE(s) (abt. 1742-1825). John and Elizabeth were married on 05 Jun 1768 in Slemere. Witnesses: Richard Lowel & John Hopper. Known children from this marriage include: Francis HOPE (1771 Kilnwick - ), Margaret (nee HOPE) HUDDLESTON(e) (1773 Kirkburn -), Jane (1778 - 1786 in Kirkburn), John (1781 Kirkburn- ), Joseph (1787 Kirkburn - ), and George (1794 Kirkburn - ).

William HOPE, widower, waggoner, married Jane JEFFERSON on 18 Dec 1820 in Bridlington, Witnesses Elizabeth Jefferson (Jane's sister?) & Ann Cowling. I have not been able to determine his earlier marriage. Known children from this marriage include: Mary (nee HOPE) RUDD (1821 Sledmere-1890 Thwing), William HOPE (1832 Sledmere -), Thomas HOPE (1826 Sledmere - 1913 Canada), Elizabeth (nee HOPE) BROWN (1827 Sledmere - 1906 Driffield), Richard HOPE (1832 Sledmere-1833 Little Driffield).

Any information or insights into this family would be greatly appreciated.

In case it helps, there are numerous user-posted family trees on Ancestry which include William Hope and Jane Jefferson. Like you, most of them have William's parents as John Hope (1744) and Elizabeth Stone (1743).

It would appear that John Hope was baptised on 23 Apr 1744 at Weaverthorpe, son of a John Hope who may have been baptised on 19 Jun 1720 at Easington, son of yet another John Hope.

Ian

Ian, thanks for your reply.

I have seen the various online ancestry trees that suggest William is the son of John & Elizabeth Stone(s). However, I have been trying to confirm this parentage through online baptismal records in Kilnwick/Kirkburn.

It's my belief that this parentage has been assumed based on the geographic closeness between Sledmere and Kirkburn.
