Driffield in 1945 - Help needed

Post by researchistorian » Mon Aug 08, 2016 2:07 pm

Hi. I'm researching a German POW who was a patient in Driffield Hospital in 1944/45 having being wounded in Normandy. He spent 4 months there and spoke of meeting wounded Allied bomber crews who were friendly towards him. I would love some background history or photos of the hospital during the war years (not sure if there was just one hospital but he said it was a civilian hospital). If anyone can help. Please contact me at cbyrne60@gmail.com Thanks

I think that the hospital referred to, might be a series of wooden huts built I think for this purpose. It was sited where a now housing estate exists next door to the Alfred Bean Hospital, in Bridlington Road, Driffield. I myself was a patient there in 1947. The cemetery is next door and there are several graves in there of polish airmen who flew from nearby air bases during the war.

If I come across a photograph or other information, I will let you know.
