My relative William Smith Gofton lived in Pockthorpe Hall in the 1840's ~ 1850's.I wondered if the hall still exsisted or if anyone had a photograph of it? Is there any local history about the hall? Any information would be of interest. Ian.

Yes, Pockthorpe Hall is still there. It is about one mile southwest of the village of Kilham in the Yorkshire Wolds and about 4 miles from Driffield.

I don't know about its history but it appears to be Georgian in date. Today it is a farm in private ownership.

To discover its history the best place to look is in the 'Victoria History of the County of York: East Riding'. This is the standard history of the county in several volumes. It is written entirely by academic historians and based upon original research. Most major reference libraries should have copies.

All the articles in these volumes are referenced to the original sources. By noting the sources that you are interested in you should be able to trace any original documents that have survived.

Yes Pockthorpe hall does exist. My father Les Smith and my grandfather Albert Smith both worked there - to the best of my knowledge both were farm foreman. Is the name a coincidence or is there some relation.
I would be interested to know more.

Thanks Geoff Pockthorpe Hall is mentioned in the Victoria history.

Ade, I would not know if there is a connection. William Smith Gofton was born in Folkton and moved to Pockthorpe via Atwick. In the 1861 census there were 12 farm workers and non were named Smith, but I never rule anything out when it comes to geneology. Ian.

[/b[black]Hi Ade,Iworked at Pockthorpe Hall with Les Smith from 1943-1944 and each Summer from 1947-1950.your Grandad,Albert was unwell at this time and was not the Foreman.I think he was foreman when Mr.Hairsine farmed and when Mr.Simpson took over just before the war.Les became foreman after the war.Albert's wife was a wonderful lady and looked after the single lads who lived in the foreman's house.Albert could turn his hand to any job from watch repairs to fixing farm machinery.I have fond memories of Pockthorpe Hall.

My Grandfather was John Robert Gofton. His Family can be traced back to Leppington near York and then to Gristhorpe and Filey and finally back to Cayton. The Goftons of Cayton date back to the 1600,s and i have extracts from the diaries of a William Beswick who married a Gofton. The Gofton name crops up a lot .
The name is supposed to have originated in Simonburn Northumberland just above Hadrians Wall.
I have three uncles who unfortunately have had no children so my branch of the Goftons will die out .
My Grandfather did mention of relatives in New Zealand who invited him to emigrate out there in the 1930,s but he declined .
I would be pleased to here from anyone who requires Family Tree information.

Sorry my mistake , on looking at my records it was Thomas Gofton born 1714 of Cayton who married Rachel Anderson nee Beswick in 1739. William Beswick i believe was her Father . The diaries however do contain Gofton extracts .
