Dismay at Show tickets decisionPublished Date: 25 June 2010

TICKETS for this year's Driffield Show, now one of the biggest events of its kind in the country, will not be sold by the town council.

To the amazement and disappointment of show director Dave Tite, Driffield Town Council has taken the decision not to sell tickets to the event from its offices on Market Walk – just days after the council was allowed to use the Showground to stage the Great Driffield Festival for free.

Mr Tite said: "It's a shame that something that brings so much to Driffield cannot be supported completely by the town council by selling tickets.

"The town council should be supporting all the events in the town and should be selling tickets because it's a way of supporting the people."

The decision came after Coun Joan Cooper raised concerns about opening the flood gates to other event organisers from the Driffield area wanting the council to do the same for them.

If given the go-ahead, it would have been the first time that tickets for the show, which is the biggest event of the year for the town, would have been available from the council offices.

Coun Cooper said: "It was my understanding that across the board we weren't going to sell tickets for shows. It's because if you open the door to one you open the door to everybody."

The matter came up for discussion at the latest town council meeting, during which deputy town mayor Coun Joyce Fletcher volunteered to give up her time for free to sell Driffield Show tickets.

But Coun Cooper asked her colleague if that meant she would be willing to do it for all events and shows in the town, adding: "If you do one, you do the lot."

Coun Cooper put forward a proposal that tickets were not sold at the council offices, seconded by Coun Alan Cousins.
Five councillors voted in favour of the proposal, with eight abstaining from the vote.

The news came as a blow to Driffield Agricultural Society director Dave Tite who has been busy preparing the site for the show.

Mr Tite said: "We are very disappointed that, after working so closely with the town council on so many projects throughout the year, it is unable to sell our tickets. But it's not a problem because our media partners the Driffield Times and Post will be selling the tickets for us."

Tickets for the show, which takes place on Wednesday July 21, are on sale now from the Driffield Post office, at Times House, Mill Street, with substantial discounts available on all advance tickets.

They are also available from Tourist Information Centres at Beverley, Bridlington, Filey, Hull, Humber Bridge, Malton, York, Brigg, Pickering, and Scarborough as well as Kelleythorpe Farm Shop, the NFU at Howden, or online at www.driffieldshow.co.uk

Well dont you think it is a bit short sighted and small minded of our two councillors, depicting a disregard for the promotion of Driffield by the Town Council? and why cant the council sell tickes for all shows at the ground -IT PROMOTES THE TOWN IT BRINGS PEOPLE INTO THE TOWN IT SUPPORTS THE LOCAL ECONOMY- SHAME ON YOU BOTH.
