If it can be proved that one of your ancestors is Mr William Mercer, druggist, then the following will be of great interest:

WILLIAM MERCER,
CHEMIST AND DRUGGIST,

BEGS leave to inform his friends and the public, that he has opened his SHOP, the third door in Scale-Lane, next to the Market-Place, Hull; where he intends carrying on the above branches wholesale and retail.

Those who please to favour him with their commands, may depend on having them executed with expedition and accuracy; and that every exertion in his power will be used to merit a continuance thereof.

Michael Pickering and Nancy Mercer had the following:John 1787 and William 1788 Wawne,Sarah 1790,Harry 1792,Rosey 1795 and Thomas 1797 Swine and Nancy and Mary.Harry married Sarah Blythe 20 Sep 1823 Beeford and came to Canada abt 1828.Henry Mercer Pickering died Kent Co,Ontario 9 Nov 1874.Henry Mercer was my 2 gt grandfather.
Since George is the brother of William then I need to find out if William is the son of George and Margaret although it would appear so since Mary Naisby is his sister.
Would an obituary of William have his parents names/

That is interesting because William Mercer appears in Baines's Directory of 1823 (see below) but does not appear in White's Directory of 1840

A further examination of White's Directory of 1841 reveals that there is no mention of William Mercer, druggist, but there is a James Chivers (see below)

No, I have not found an obituary for William Mercer, druggist, in the Hull Packet for the year 1835.

From the information gathered so far, the burial entry for William Mercer in Holy Trinity is looking promising !

It does not state clearly in the obituary that the place of death was Hull:

The following is the obituary listed before George Mercer:

DEATHS

On Friday morning, at her home in Whitefriargate, aged 62, Mrs Ker, relict of the late Hugh Ker, Esq. of this place.

DEATHS

Same day, [Friday morning] after a lingering illness, which he bore with great fortitude and resignation, aged 54, Mr George Mercer, brother to Mr William Mercer, of this town, druggest.

Hi Ed,

At the time of writing I have not found anything for George, but the interesting thing is that there could be some family information relating to William's marriage by licence (see below)

Marriage Licences

The "usual" process of marriage involved the calling of "Banns" at the parish churches of bride & groom on three Sundays preceding the marriage. In the event of there being no objection, the marriage could then go ahead. An alternative was to obtain a licence, usually from the local bishop, which permitted the couple to marry more-or-less immediately. Since there was obvious potential for abuse, the bishop required the couple to sign an "Allegation" which confirmed that there was no known impediment to the marriage and also, for a "Bond" to be entered into whereby if the allegation proved false, the bondsmen (who might include the groom) would pay a substantial financial penalty. A "Licence" would then be issued which the couple would take to the minister and which gave him authority to marry the couple. The place of marriage will frequently be specified but this is not always the case, particularly with earlier licences. The licence was usually retained by the minister and seldom survives. The Bond & Allegation are usually to be found in the Diocesan Record Office. Those for many counties have been indexed and indexes published.

The value of these documents is that if a couple married by licence, the surviving documents can identify the church where the marriage was to take place allowing searches to be made of the appropriate registers. The documents will also often record the ages of the parties and their residence, neither of which is guaranteed to appear in the marriage register. Bondsmen were frequently related to the couple and their names may assist in further research.

Regards,
Peter6
